A short 20 minute ferry from the beautiful Horseshoe Bay in West Vancouver, Bowen Island is the perfect getaway from the city on a summer’s afternoon. We created a fun itinerary for you to get a taste of the island lifestyle with adventures on and off the water and a fantastic dinner to unwind at the end of the day.
First,
Hop on the ferry in Horseshoe Bay to Bowen Island’s Snug Cove. It’s only a 20 minute ride, so be sure to chill on the upper sun deck to take in the views of the Howe Sound and North Shore mountains on your way over.
Next,
You’ll land in Snug Cove Marina on Bowen Island. Here, you can walk up and grab a coffee or treat at one of the local cafes to fuel up before heading on the water. Branch & Butter, located right beside the marina, has rotating Earnest Ice cream flavours (including vegan ones!) that are enjoyed best sitting by the water.
Then,
Head only a few steps down the road to find Bowen Island Sea Kayaking. Here, you can rent paddle boards or kayaks by the hour, which is really the best way to explore the island. There are plenty of coves and beautiful cliffs into the ocean to check out super close by. Maybe you’ll even see some seals or wildlife!
Tip: Until the end of June, enjoy 2-for-1 on all rentals with the promo-code 2FOR1 if you go on a Thursday!
After,
Once you’re ready to dry off and head in-land, you’ll want to check out some of the locally-owned art galleries in Artisan Square. This street is filled with galleries, boutique shops and studios where you can see all the incredible work of local artists on the island.
Still feeling adventurous?
If you brought your car over on the ferry, you might want to explore the other side of the Island and visit Cape Roger Curtis Beach and Light house. This stunning and secluded beach offers panoramic views of the ocean for a true escape from the busyness of the city.
Or,
Before it gets dark, you could take a hike up Mount Gardner. The highest point on the island at 719 m, there are 3 different trail heads to explore. To get to the top is a tough 3+ hour hike, so be sure to give yourself enough time if you decide to explore in this area.
Starving yet?
The best way to end your evening on Bowen Island is a delicious dinner at one of the local patios. Barcelona Tapas and Wine Bar is our favourite, with their sangria pitcher and fresh seafood. Be sure to make a reservation if you’re there on the weekend!
