Also known as the Hollywood of the North, Vancouver is the location of plenty of killer movies (pun intended). This month, be sure to check out some of these iconic scary movies filmed in and around the city.
Bonus points if you can recognize the locations!
1. The Cabin in the Woods (2011)
The cult-favourite horror movie, The Cabin in the Woods was entirely shot in Vancouver. There are recognizable shots in the Coquihalla Canyon Provincial Park, Half Moon Bay and at BCIT! This one might make you reconsider that fall hike through the woods here…
2. The Butterfly Effect (2004)
This horror movie with young Ashton Kutcher and Amy Smart was mostly filmed all over Greater Vancouver, including the barely recognizable Park theatre on Cambie. See which filming locations you’ve been to in this awesome sci-fi thriller.
3. The Exorcism of Emily Rose (2005)
Based on a *true story*, this terrifying film was filmed both in LA and Vancouver on the University of British Columbia campus. Watching this might change the way you look at your walk to class.
4. Freddy vs Jason (2003)
Another horror film shot at Buntzen Lake, Freddy vs Jason is a perfect slasher movie before Halloween. Completely bone-chilling, Freddy vs Jason is a mash-up of such legends, it easily deserves a screening.
5. Final Destination (2000)
This popular series is equal parts thriller and comedy relief. Filmed all over the province, most notably for Vancouver are the shots at the Vancouver International Airport. As if the airport nowadays wasn’t anxiety-inducing enough lol.
6. The Grey (2011)
This crazy thriller with Liam Neeson is must-see if you’re into Man-Vs-Nature survival films. Largely filmed in Vancouver, Squamish, Whistler and Smithers – it’s crazy to think that these wild mountains are right in our backyard. We’d rather not think about the wolves though.
7. It (2017)
Although the majority of this film was shot in Ontario, keep your eyes peeled for the village scene, shot in our very own home-town. This ultra-popular horror film received so much hype that it should be on everyone’s horror-movie watch list.
8. Jennifer’s Body (2009)
This long-time classic with Megan Fox and Amanda Seyfried was filmed all over Vancouver. You’ll be able to recognize Sasamat Lake, the Sutton Place Hotel and some of Greater Vancouver’s high schools.
