If you don´t already know about these three incredible businesses – read on. This event is gonna be a hit.
Next week, the Vancouver-based A Sober Girls Guide is teaming up with another local love of ours, Sansorium, for a Live Podcast and Mocktail-tasting event at the stunning Nemesis Coffee. This special event will feature a panel of three, incredible women in conversation with A Sober Girls Guide founder, Jessica Jeboult to discuss their spectrum of sobriety journeys. Afterwards, there will be a paired selection of delicious bites from the Word´s all-new night menu with specialty non-alcoholic wine and cocktails.
Created almost 5 years ago by Jessica Jeboult – A Sober Girls Guide began as a blog; a medium for Jessica to share tips and tricks of her sobriety journey with other women. After years of working deep in the party-scene as a full time DJ in LA, Jessica knew she had to make a change in her lifestyle but just didn´t find group sessions like AA working for her. She felt that assuming the label, and calling herself an alcoholic would be isolating, and didn´t seem to encompass who she was or the life she wanted to lead.
She thought to herself, “This can´t be the only way…I´m young, and I´m not going to be this person”.
Since then, this casual, no-bs blog to document her journey has evolved into a highly successful weekly podcast, video channel and community for like-minded women interested in sobriety. A Sober Girls Guide prioritizes honest conversations about mental health, self development, wellness, spirituality – and is completely inclusive to the total spectrum of sobriety.
Jessica´s podcasts are the perfect balance between fun and informative – an authentic representation of her mission with A Sober Girls Guide. She´s built a healthy, supportive community of over 66k listeners (monthly!) that just shows how much of a necessity having real, open conversations about alcohol is today. Sarcastic, witty, and full of life – Jessica is a certified life coach with over 10 years of experience dealing with sobriety and recovery.
And she´s planned this upcoming Live Podcast event to be a fun and inclusive space, to bring local women together for a night of fun drinks and great people in one of the city´s most beautiful spaces.
Before the pandemic, she hosted pop-up events at local bars (and one in Toronto) that enabled women to check out these popular spots, while still feeling safe and included. These fun events were super influential and their success really spoke to the increase in people not necessarily wanting to go completely sober, but also just being open to having honest conversations about alcohol. Seeing an uptick in Vancouver and Canada as a whole, people want more options.
After an event, Jessica received a response from one of the girls: “I just wanted you to know that when I walked in and saw all the alcohol on the wall and the bar, it just kind of threw me for a sec. I have never been to a public place where I haven´t had a drink. And then I came over to our section of Sober Girls and all that stress is completely gone, because I´m not just the one person that isn´t drinking from my friend group – it is the norm. And I never thought I would feel this way”.
Instead of putting people in boxes or labels, Jessica says, “Let´s just talk about it, let´s hear some inspiring stories because there´s some cool s*** to talk about”. What´s important to her was to include the reality of different spectrums of sobriety, to ask ourselves deeper questions, to re-examine all our ties to what is good, and what is bad – to really, at the end of the day, do what feels good for you. Now that people are starting re-evaluate their relationship with alcohol more than ever, A Sober Girls Guide wants to celebrate, in a space that is booze-free, fun and inclusive.
Tuesday´s event will host celebrity photographer Karolina Turek, Zen Den Meditation founder Carrie Bailey, and Sober Saturdayz, cali-sober influencer Kaitie Degen. A Sober Girls Guide´s first event since the pandemic, we can bet that it´ll be the coolest Live Podcast and Mocktail event Vancouver has seen! Featuring five different mixed, non-alcoholic cocktails, the night will be filled with delicious eats provided by Nemesis, craft drinks from Lyres Spirits and of course, the incredible stories of these three panelists. More personal than the podcasts, this kind of event is a wonderful opportunity for sober, or sober-curious people to join a cool group that normalizes sober culture, and have a really fun time.
