Christmas is a time for giving and a really great opportunity to support local charitable organizations helping those more in need in our community.
1. Covenant House
Covenant House Vancouver is the wonderful organization that supports homeless and at-risk-street youth aged 16-24 in Vancouver. For years, they’ve been providing unconditional love and support to those fleeing abuse or in need of support after foster care. Their Christmas backpack program is one of many easy methods to help out. At this time, they’re most in need of men’s underwear, journals and sweatpants.
2. Cause We Care
Founded in 2007, Cause We Care focuses on assisting single mothers and their families in need in Vancouver. Right now, they are running their Holiday Care Package Drive of both necessities and treats for families.
3. Archway Community Services
Helping those affected by the floods in Abbotsford and the surrounding areas, this non-profit has been running for over 50 years. Furthermore, your favourite The Pie Shoppe is donating one dollar from every holiday pie sold to this incredible organization. So grab some pie and give back!
4. Vancouver Food Bank
A long time staple in the community, the Vancouver Food Bank serves all affected by food security in Greater Vancouver. While many of us get to sit down at a table with friends and family this holiday season and indulge, many in our community go hungry. Supporting the Food Bank is a really important way to give back – either by volunteering or donating food and supplies that they really need.
5. Downtown East Side Women’s Centre
One of the most important and impactful organizations in our community, the Downtown Eastside Women’s Shelter is a saving-grace for many. This safe space has been housing and getting women in the Downtown Eastside back on their feet with secure bathrooms, clean clothing, warm food and tons of other life-saving services. Vancouver is expecting to be hit with a polar-vortex soon, help out by donating warm clothing to those in need!
6. Mission Possible
Promoting “Empowerment Through Opportunity”, this Downtown Eastside non-profit makes a lasting impact in the community by assisting those with unemployment. Donating money to this incredible organization means mentorship and employment training as well as offering supportive, transitional work opportunities.
